New Mexico | a Journey through Culture & Nature
Pueblo HornosA trip through the heritage, traditions, crafts and customs of the Native Pueblo people of New Mexico.
11 NIGHTS | By attending traditional ceremonies at the pueblos along the Rio Grande, where you can enjoy the folklore of their dances, and visiting markets where unique Indian crafts are sold you will learn about the first inhabitants of this land and their life today.
In Santa Fe, you are surrounded by ancient and contemporary Native art, and in Taos you can walk through the original Indian village where life has existed for over a thousand years. Acoma Pueblo, known as Sky City for its position atop a high mesa is surrounded by a spectacular pristine landscape that can be enjoyed during the walk through the ancient village; Zuni Pueblo is the first pueblo encountered by the conquistadores in the mid 1500’s: both have a rich history and distinctive art forms. You encounter ancient civilizations in Puye Cliffs, Chaco Canyon and in the Mogollon area - in Southwest New Mexico, and nature at its most spectacular stage in Carlsbad Caverns, a network of caves that extends for almost 50 kilometers and is among the oldest and largest in the world, in White Sands, the world largest white desert and in the Gila Wilderness vast territory where the Apache tribes lived for centuries.
In the summer two extraordinary PowWows take place (dates change every year).

Christmas and New Year in the Land of Enchantment
Farolitos & Luminaria in Santa FeWith or without snow, New Mexico in winter is a fascinating destination, with beautiful skies and crisp air.
December 23 - January 2 | During the holidays all Pueblos hold ceremonies and dances. Usually winter dances are for the hunt: prayers for abundant game and for successful hunting. The animal dances, depict buffalo or deer - because successful hunting meant survival during winter. Other dances are reminiscent of Spanish traditions or are prayers for a rich harvest. The dance is the public part of the ceremonies that also includes secret rituals in the kivas, the society ceremonial chamber.
The beautiful and unique museums of Santa Fe and Taos are open with exciting exhibitions; concerts are taking place in theaters and churches. On Christmas Eve one can participate together with all Santa Feans to the ‘Canyon Road Walk', the road famous for its numerous galleries located in the old adobe house. Every building is decorated with the typical farolitos and people gather around bonfires to warm up and sing together. If the slopes are blessed with snow, it is a real paradise!
During this season migration birds rest in a vast oasis, in the southern part of the state, with large ponds where they can be seen during their exciting morning take-offs and sunset landings. Nearby sits the largest white dunes desert of the world. La Mesilla, near Las Cruces, is a small Mexican style village with great restaurants. Then back north with a stop at the Camino Real International Heritage Center and at one of New Mexico 's most famous diner for green chile hamburgers. A visit to Acoma Pueblo, known as "Sky City" for its position atop a mesa, one of the oldest continuously inhabited villages in North America , recently designated as a National Trust site and then back to Santa Fe where, if the sky is clear as most nights is, one can experience star watching in one of the world's brightest skies.

Women’s World
Dancing with Wolves
Kevin CostnerFor women only, for women who are seeking a vacation without restraints
8 NIGHTS in New Mexico | This trip to Santa Fe, in a state - New Mexico – where even the plates on the cars tell us that it is the “Land of Enchantment”, is based on the following idea: How many trips have we made in a rush without a desire to gain a deeper understanding? How many places have we only visited because they have been classics for hundreds of years and for thousands of tourists? This trip is different. It’s not for a big bunch of people but for 5 or 6 friends who want to go to an “elsewhere”, at a slow pace, taking the time to find out about other lives and other stories, not only to see beautiful places just for the sake of having been there but to share life experiences and to learn about something new and different. Or to ride in the desert, dreaming of cowboys and Kevin Costner…and then make a stop to understand and experience and to look –in a land rich in talents and artists - works of art and monuments in the open-air, because in New Mexico art and nature are a winning combination, one cannot do without the other, and this climate is of course, a great ally.
And then, as in a childhood fantasy, to walk in the footsteps of the redskins – as they were still called only twenty years ago – who didn’t and don’t shout "HOW" or shoot poisoned arrows, but cultivate a love of nature and ceremonies and live in magical places that are steeped in history and who have left behind them artifacts of a past that was much more sophisticated than we have been led to believe.
So, from flourishing Santa Fe, to the ex (well maybe not so ex…) hippy Taos, from Chaco Canyon - full of charm with its ruins and the moon which peeps out from behind rocks pierced by the wind of history, to the romantic landscapes of Galisteo, and on the way secret and unexpected opportunities for exciting shopping.
This is really a trip not to be missed, that you can savor by reading the program slowly and peacefully, day after day. And Seven Directions will look after everything else.
