Footprints and Voices from the Past--Prehistoric explorations near Santa Fe

September 15-19, 2011. 4 Nights, Guided Tour

This tour through the northern region of New Mexico features a comprehensive view of ancient Native American cultures. Accompanied by experts in archeology and the history of the Southwest, you will visit cliff dwellings and ruins and see fascinating rock art. A few hours with a professional photographer and special program for the evenings also make this and ideal, enjoyable and informative vacation.

Day One.
September 15. |

Arrive at Albuquerque's Sunport International Airport and take the shuttle to Santa Fe, checking in at the hotel

Day Two.
September 16. | D.

RodeoAfter breakfast, an introductory summary of New Mexico's Puebloan ancestors and a tour of Santa Fe, America's oldest state capital. Included in today's activities is a walk through the historic Plaza and downtown sector, followed by a visit to the New Mexico History Museum (accompanied by a docent). After lunch, you depart to Pecos National Historic Park and see the ruins of its famous pueblo and adobe mission church, first visited during the Coronado expedition in mid 1500’. These ruins were once the largest Indian pueblo community in the Southwest and dominated a major trading route in this, the heart of the Old Santa Fe Trail country. In the old town of Pecos, a festive dinner with music awaits you.

Day Three.
September 17. | L.D.

Departure for Puye’ Cliffs, on the Santa Clara pueblo land. You will walk along cliff dwellings and tour the ruins of a historic Santa Clara village perched on the mesa summit. The next stop is Bandelier National Monument. Inhabited long before the start of the Common Era (CE), here you will enjoy a sumptuous picnic before visiting a pueblo ruin and have the opportunity to step inside cave dwellings, not just see them.
Later in the evening you will savor a private dinner at the home of a Native American chef and share her knowledge on the diet of ancient and contemporary Pueblo people.

Day Four.
September 18. | D.


Taos Pueblo On 1,000-foot-high Mesa Prieta overlooking the Rio Grande River, Wells Petroglyph Preserve features an exceptional display of rock art dating between 1300 and 1600 CE. The tour is specially guided by a docent and requires hiking with a choice between easy or more rugged trails.
After sampling local wine at a nearby winery, with lunch afterward near the old station of the historic Chile Line Train, a photographer will take you to hidden places that best capture the images and atmosphere of New Mexico's spirit born from compelling geology and ancient cultural history.
At the end of the afternoon you will travel to Albuquerque for your farewell dinner.

Day Five.

Participants depart for home. The transfer to the airport is by free hotel shuttle.

Price includes: 3 nights at Hotel Plaza Real in Santa Fe and 1 night at Best Western Rio Grande in Albuquerque, 1 breakfast and 4 meals, escort and guides, transportation, admissions fees, N.M. tax.

If you are traveling alone and wish to share a room, we will do our best to find someone on the tour. If a roommate cannot be found, the single supplement will be charged.

Some minor itinerary changes may be made. Due to fluctuations in oil prices and State tax increases, a surcharge may be added to your tour fee. Details and costs will be advised before departure.

Travel and Life & Health insurances are recommended. An “Indemnification and Hold Harmless” agreement has to be signed by each participant before starting the trip.
